As an artist, I believe I have a unique opportunity to connect people, beliefs, and ideas and unite them through my work. Having relocated to North Holland at the beginning of the year, I view myself as a new “face of today.” However, it was important to me that I captured the image of someone who truly embodied Dutch culture and spirit.

In Loes Hoekstra, I found just that. At 85 years of age, Loes is still an active member of her rowing community, which she joined at the age of 14. Her unwavering commitment is a testament to the strong sense of community that exists in North Holland. For over seven decades, she has dedicated herself to the club, not only as a rower but also as a volunteer and mentor. Her passion for rowing and her dedication to her fellow club members are a reflection of the Dutch values of perseverance, teamwork, and service to others.

Through discussions with Loes, I felt I gained invaluable insights into the community spirit that defines this city. When I asked her how she has remained so active and young in spirit, she shared with me the Dutch proverb “To sit behind the geraniums,” informing me that she has no intention of letting the world pass by her while she sits inside.

Along with her love of rowing, Loes has a strong passion for gardening, as represented in the background of the work. I deliberately chose to paint tulips as they are not only the national flower but also a symbol of friendship. The abstract nature of the background contrasting the traditional realism of the portrait represents the fusion of the new age artist with the traditional older subject. As a contemporary artist, I am drawn to the juxtaposition of old and new, tradition and modernity. The abstract background symbolizes the ever-changing world around us, while the realistic depiction of Loes represents the enduring values and traditions that have shaped her life.Through this contrast, I aim to convey the dynamic relationship between the past and the present and to highlight the importance of preserving our cultural heritage while embracing the possibilities of the future.
