Vrouwen van Nieuw-West – Willemieke Kars
Amsterdam
Willemieke Kars graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in 2015. She now has her studio in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Her work as an autonomous artist focuses on documentary and portrait photography, analyzing the complex role of women in contemporary society. Willemieke is driven by personal observations, discomfort, and questions she poses to herself. The friction these elements create forms the starting point for her artistic process. Her self-initiated projects delve into the image of women to which we are exposed, as well as how women perceive themselves; this perception often arises from visual culture. Displaying women in roles that society does not consider as given is a recurring theme in her work.
